Donantes-300x267Why should you donate ovules? Compensations for the donor

There are patients who, for various different reasons, do not have oocytes (eggs) able of develope into a healthy embryo, so the only chance to get pregnant is through egg donation.

With the donation, the donor gets a series of trade-offs.

Solidarity is one of them.

By donating their eggs, the donor is allowing another woman to get pregnant. Otherwise it will not be possible. After the treatment the recipient of the eggs enjoy great overwhelming feeling of happiness because they often take a long time to achieve the pregnancy, with the stress problems and depression that this entails, due to the fact that their lives go around their infertility problem. Other solutions, such as adoption, are complicated because they can take long time to be completed.

With donation, the donor usually feels very pleased to have been able to help another woman to fulfill her dream of having a child.

Waiting lists are long and the shortage of donors makes sometimes that women abandone their dream of become a mother. Finally, the adoption in many cases is difficult.

Other compensation is the personal one.

By donating their eggs, a comprehensive study of the health of the donor is performed, so is the reproductive health due to the parameters studied. For example, egg quality, which can not be studied in any other way but with the egg retrieval.

There are also financial compensation

Although donation is considered an altruistic act by law, financial compensation for the inconvenience, travel, meals, etc. are allowed

Am I allowed to donate ovules?

There are several requirements to make egg donation:

  • Aged between 18 and 35 years.
  • Not genetic, congenital hereditary or transmissible diseases, nor relatives with such diseases
  • Being in good mental state and physical health.
  • Have a normal ovarian function
  • Have not six or more descendants, due or not to assisted reproduction.

Is anonymous egg donation?

The Spanish legislation requires it and it is anonymous for both: the donor and the receptor couple.

The extraction process

In the normal menses cycle, only one egg is produced along the way. However, this is insufficient to perform a cycle of assisted reproduction, and therefore a technique called “ovarian stimulation” is performed, allowing the maturation from ten to fifteen eggs per cycle. The Hormone treatment goes for 10 to 15 days and administered by subcutaneous injections, our doctors will be checking the donor to assure a correct develope of the eggs and minimize the risk for the donor until the extraction.

The extraction is carried through the vagina ultrasonically guided. It is performed in the operating room under sedation, so the aches and pains are minimal. In less than two hours you would usually be discharged from the hospital.

If you want to know about the relevant legislation, you can read here the Royal Decree 412/1996 of 1st of March, in which mandatory protocols for studying donors and relatives are showed, as well as the assisted human reproduction techniques established and regulated in the organization of the National Gamete Donor Register and pre-embryos for the purposes of human reproduction.
