In dit proces zijn er echter een aantal varianten die een hoofdrol spelen en een zwangerschap kunnen bevorderen of zelfs voorkomen. Het gaat er juist om de beste spermatozoa te kiezen, die het meest geschikt zijn en ook het best passen bij de eicel die zij moeten bevruchten. Op die manier worden de kansen op succes vermenigvuldigd. Het succes ligt in het feit dat het gebruikelijk is de PICSI-techniek te combineren met de MACS-selectie, die erin bestaat de spermatozoa te kiezen met de minste DNA-veranderingen en niet-apoptotisch.<\/p><p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\">De PICSI-techniek is ook bekend onder de naam fysiologische sperma-injectie. Het bestaat erin de spermatozoa te selecteren op basis van hun affiniteit met de granuloscellen, de cellen die de eicel omgeven. Receptoren in het celmembraan zorgen ervoor dat het sperma en de eicel op elkaar lijken. Wanneer de zaadcellen zich aan deze gelmoleculen hebben gehecht, kunnen zij beter onder de microscoop worden ge\u00efdentificeerd. Deze kweek veroorzaakt veranderingen in de beweeglijkheid van het sperma.
